You can save a life

Encouraging someone to talk and get support can make a big difference.

We know that directly asking someone if they are thinking of suicide can save their life.

It won’t make things worse.

It's something Clare (pictured above) has learned to do with her son Andrew, which has helped to keep him safe.

Starting a conversation

If you’re unsure how to start a conversation and what to say, this guide to talking, listening and reducing the stigma around suicide can help.

SAMH’s guide to helping friends and family is also worth reading. It lists 12 easy things to try if you’re worried, from learning a little bit about mental health to trying a heart-felt hug.

Whoever you’re worried about, don’t shoulder this alone. Reach out to a trusted family member, friend or professional if you can, so you have support too.
